The flag of Sweden has a blue background and a gold or yellow Scandinavian cross that extends to the edges of the flag. The Scandinavian cross represents Christianity, the religion on which the country was founded. The design and colors of the flag match the coat of arms of Sweden of 1442. Blue and yellow were also used as the country's official colors since the reign of King Magnus III, who ruled in 1275 and had a blue and yellow royal coat of arms.
