What is the meaning of a military shadow box? What goes in it?

A military shadow box is a way for someone to display either their own or someone else's accolades, accomplishments, badges or any other symbols of importance that were earned in during their time of service in any of the branches of the United States military. It is usually made of a solid wood and has a glass or plastic front with a felt lining and comes in different shapes, sizes and finishes.

Along with being a typical item that was sent home with Marine Corps. retirees, the shadow box was originally designed and coined by the United States Navy. Superstition used to be that when retiring from their ship, if a sailor's shadow touched the shore before they did, it would be bad luck. This bore the creation of the shadow box which would in turn house the sailor's accomplishments and act as a metaphorical shadow ensuring it wouldn't touch the ground prior and no ill luck would be had.

A military shadow box is often used to display medals, patches, memorabilia, ribbons, certificates, badges, uniforms and awards that the service member collected and was awarded throughout their career.

How do you organize and arrange a military shadow box

There really is no right and wrong way to organize and arrange a military shadow box. Some, if not most shadow boxes may contain a spot to put a folded flag, so you will obviously want to put one there. Shadow boxes can be made to hold one or two flags, with two, people typically will use the American flag and the Military Service Branch associated with the service man or woman. These also come in different sizes too, with some shadow boxes being made to hold a 3ft by 5ft flag and some made to hold a 5ft by 9.5ft sized flag. As long as you got some important items in there and it looks good, you are good to go!
