The name Minneapolis was created by the city’s first schoolmaster, who took the work mini which is the Dakota word for water and polis which is city in Greek and combined them. It was officially incorporated as a city in 1867.

Louis Sundin designed the flag in 1955 as part of a contest, it was later adopted by the City Council. The flag features a blue pennant with a white circle that contains four symbols on a white background. The building symbolizes education and the arts, the cogged wheel and square symbolize labor and industry, the pilot wheel symbolizes the lakes and rivers, and the microscope symbolizes the research, skilled craftsmanship and progress.
