Did you know? The first "national" flag of New Zealand featured the red cross of St. George on a white background and a smaller red St. George's cross in the top left-hand corner on a blue background. A white eight-pointed star was centered in each of the blue quarters divided by the cross. This flag was chosen at a meeting in Waitangi in 1834 attended by missionionaries, ship captains, settlers and 25 chiefs of the native people of New Zealand. Do you know the name of New Zealand's native people? Click on the "more" button below for the answer.

The first know inhabitants of New Zealand were the Maori, a people believed to be descended from Polynesians who emigrated from other South Pacific islands over hundreds to thousands of years.
